The Tether Q3 2026 attestation says USDT's issuer held $7.95 billion more in assets than it owed token holders on 30 September, almost double the $4.11 billion cushion it reported in June (BDO report, Q2 report).
Tether framed it as a profit story: $1.5 billion of net operating profit in the quarter and $4.5 billion over nine months (Tether). The line items tell you something more useful. Price moves did most of the rebuild, and the share of reserves sitting in cash-like assets actually went down.
Here's what changed between June and September, what BDO did and didn't check, and how much of a market drop the new buffer can take before it's gone.
Key Takeaways
- Excess reserves rose to $7.95 billion from $4.11 billion, on $191.45 billion of assets against $183.50 billion of liabilities (BDO report).
- Bitcoin's 42.6% price rise added about $2.47 billion and gold about $0.7 billion, so price marks explain most of the $3.85 billion gain (Unchained).
- The cash-like bucket fell to $139.58 billion from $140.64 billion as overnight repo roughly halved and Treasury bills grew (BDO report).
- The report's gold line implies about 3.4 fewer tonnes than in June, and Tether hasn't said why (Unchained).
- By Stablecoin Insider's math, a 15.3% fall in Tether's $51.9 billion of non-cash assets would erase the buffer, up from 8.7% in June (BDO report).
What the Tether Q3 2026 attestation shows
BDO Advisory Services in Milan signed a reasonable assurance opinion under ISAE 3000 (Revised) on 30 October 2026. It covers total assets of $191,451,091,374 and liabilities of $183,496,460,904, of which $183,469,787,261 is tokens issued (BDO report).
Here's how each reserve line moved over the quarter, in billions of US dollars (Stablecoin Insider table from the two BDO reports):
| Line item | 30 Jun 2026 | 30 Sep 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| US Treasury bills | 114.96 | 122.84 | +7.88 |

Tether says its direct and indirect Treasury bill exposure is $132.4 billion and USDT issuance held near $184 billion through the year (Tether). That $132.4 billion is the bills line plus overnight repo, which shows the two moved in opposite directions rather than the total growing much.
Bitcoin and gold did most of the work
The report values bitcoin at $83,621.23, up from $58,642.15 in June, and gold at $4,157.41 an ounce, up from $4,008.02 (BDO Q3, BDO Q2).
Unchained calculates that the bitcoin move alone added about $2.47 billion on roughly 98,900 BTC, and gold's 3.7% rise about $700 million (Unchained). Dividing the report's own values by its prices, Stablecoin Insider gets about 100,060 BTC at September versus 98,930 in June, so Tether added roughly 1,100 coins (BDO report).
Gold went the other way. The same math gives about 4.59 million ounces, or 142.8 tonnes, versus 146.2 tonnes in June, and Reuters and Unchained both flagged the 3.4 tonne drop without a reason from Tether (Unchained). The report doesn't say whether metal was sold, moved or reclassified.
Profit isn't the same as attested equity. Tether's $4.5 billion nine-month operating profit is not a line in the BDO report, which shows a nine-month financial result of $1.66 billion and net capital movements of minus $519 million (BDO report).
The cash-like share got smaller
Cash, bills and repo made up 72.9% of assets at 30 September, down from 74.9% at 30 June, by Stablecoin Insider's calculation from the two reports (BDO Q3, BDO Q2).
Measured against tokens, the cash-like bucket covers about 76.1% of liabilities, versus 76.6% in June. The gap between liabilities and cash-like assets is about $43.9 billion, which is filled by gold, bitcoin, loans and other investments (BDO report).
The shift from overnight repo into bills matters less than it sounds. The bills carry a weighted average maturity under 90 days, so they stay short (BDO report). But overnight repo turns back into cash the next day, and Tether now holds $9.1 billion less of it. If you want the full breakdown of what each category means, our explainer on what backs Tether USDT walks through it.
How much of a drop can the buffer absorb?
Non-cash assets totaled about $51.9 billion at September, up from $47.1 billion. The $7.95 billion buffer is 15.3% of that, against 8.7% in June, so a uniform 15.3% fall in those assets would wipe it out (Stablecoin Insider estimate from the BDO report).
A harsher but plausible shock hits the volatile lines only. Here's the same test applied to both quarter-ends, in billions (Stablecoin Insider scenario from the BDO reports):
| Shock | On 30 Jun book | On 30 Sep book |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin down 30% | -1.74 | -2.51 |
| Gold down 15% | -2.83 | -2.86 |
| Public equities down 25% | -0.94 | -1.04 |
| Total hit | -5.51 | -6.42 |
| Buffer left | -1.40 | +1.54 |

The same shock that would have pushed June's book below 1:1 leaves September's with about $1.5 billion to spare. That's real progress, but it came mostly from the assets that create the risk. For context, the buffer was $8.23 billion at the end of March (Tether Q1), so September's cushion is still about $280 million short of March.
What BDO checked, and what it didn't
BDO confirmed balances with banks and depositaries, sampled the gold bars, reconciled blockchain ledgers and checked collateral on a sample of secured loans (BDO report). Its opinion covers only total assets and liabilities at 11:59 PM UTC on 30 September. The notes, including the 13-chain list and the regulatory description, weren't part of the engagement.
Two details are easy to miss. Opening equity for 2025 was restated to $6.814 billion from $6.338 billion to match the audited 2025 accounts, and BDO's emphasis paragraphs note a New York class action with no provision booked and no expected credit loss on the loans (BDO report). Our guide on how to read a stablecoin attestation explains why those paragraphs matter.
What happened after 30 September
The snapshot is a month old. Since then, Tether froze more than 1.567 billion USDT tied to the Binance hack (Paolo Ardoino on X), as our Binance hack breakdown details. Frozen tokens stay on the liability side until Tether destroys and reissues them.
Circulating USDT has also slipped. DefiLlama shows about $183.8 billion on 30 September and about $180.1 billion on 31 October, a drop of roughly $3.7 billion (DefiLlama). USDT still holds about 60% of a stablecoin market near $297 billion, per Cointelegraph's read of DefiLlama (Cointelegraph).
How the reserve mix compares with US rules
USDT isn't a US permitted payment stablecoin, but the GENIUS Act gives you a useful yardstick. It limits reserves to cash, insured deposits, Treasuries with 93 days or less to maturity, overnight repo and government money funds, as our GENIUS Act guide explains.
On that list, somewhere between about 72% and 76% of Tether's liabilities would qualify, depending on how term repo and bill maturities are treated (Stablecoin Insider estimate from the BDO report). Gold, bitcoin, loans and equities wouldn't count at all.
Compare with June. Our Q2 breakdown shows how gold and bitcoin cut the buffer in half before this rebound.
FAQ
What does the Tether Q3 2026 attestation show?
Total assets of $191.45 billion against liabilities of $183.50 billion on 30 September 2026, leaving $7.95 billion of excess reserves (BDO report).
How much profit did Tether make in Q3 2026?
Tether reported $1.5 billion of net operating profit for the quarter and $4.5 billion for nine months, a figure BDO did not attest (Tether).
Why did Tether's reserve buffer nearly double?
Mostly price moves: bitcoin's rise added about $2.47 billion and gold about $0.7 billion, by Unchained's count (Unchained).
How much bitcoin and gold does Tether hold?
$8.37 billion of bitcoin and $19.08 billion of gold at 30 September, which implies about 100,060 BTC and 142.8 tonnes by Stablecoin Insider's math (BDO report).
Who audited Tether's Q3 2026 reserves?
BDO Advisory Services provided the assurance. It's an attestation, not a full audit: BDO performed a point-in-time ISAE 3000 assurance engagement on assets and liabilities, not an audit of results (BDO report).
Is USDT fully backed?
On 30 September, reported assets exceeded token liabilities by about 4.3%, but roughly 27% of assets were gold, bitcoin, loans and other non-cash holdings (BDO report).
What to watch next
The Q4 report should show three things: whether Tether explains the gold drop, how much of the Binance freeze ends in burns and reissues, and whether profit can lift the buffer if bitcoin stops helping (BDO report).
Until then, you're best off reading the buffer as a range, not a number. It's $7.95 billion on a calm day and a lot less in a bad week for crypto and gold.
