Robinhood RLUSD Deal: What Ripple's Partnership Changes

Ripple and Robinhood announced a Robinhood RLUSD partnership on 27 October 2026: XRPL settlement at Bitstamp, Ripple Treasury for Robinhood's own cash, and an app listing later this year. Stablecoin Insider checks every figure and asks what it means next to USDG, which Robinhood also backs.

Table of Contents

The Robinhood RLUSD deal is bigger than a token listing. On Tuesday, 27 October 2026, Ripple and Robinhood announced a partnership that puts Ripple's dollar stablecoin inside Robinhood's institutional exchange, its own treasury desk and, later this year, its retail app (Ripple).

CNBC framed it as part of Robinhood's push to become a global financial superapp (CNBC). The twist: Robinhood is also a founding member of the network behind USDG, a rival stablecoin issued by Paxos (Paxos).

So which dollar wins on Robinhood? This analysis sorts what is live from what is promised, checks every number, and looks at where RLUSD can actually gain ground.

Key Takeaways

  • RLUSD is live on Robinhood Chain and Bitstamp by Robinhood, with the Robinhood app expected later in 2026 (Ripple).
  • Bitstamp will use RLUSD on the XRP Ledger for institutional settlement, and Robinhood will run its own treasury on Ripple Treasury (Ripple).
  • RLUSD supply is $2.599 billion on DefiLlama, up $193.6 million in a week, with $1.002 billion on the XRP Ledger (DefiLlama).
  • USDG, which Robinhood also backs, is bigger at $3.056 billion, and $691.4 million of it sits on Robinhood Chain (DefiLlama).
  • The same day, BNY added XRP and RLUSD to its custody platform and said it intends to let clients mint and redeem RLUSD directly, subject to approvals (Ripple and BNY).

What the Robinhood RLUSD partnership includes

The release names four parts. Each has a different status, which matters more than the headline (Ripple).

Robinhood's Johann Kerbrat summed it up in three parts: RLUSD for institutional settlement, Ripple Treasury for operations and Ripple Prime for financing (CNBC). Ripple President Monica Long told CNBC the deal is "about much more than trading."

Ripple Treasury is Ripple's corporate treasury software, sold to finance teams rather than traders (Ripple Treasury). Robinhood running its own cash through it is the least flashy part of the deal, and arguably the stickiest.

📌
Live vs later: Robinhood Chain and Bitstamp access is live today. The app listing, XRPL settlement at Bitstamp and the Ripple Treasury rollout are announced plans with no dates beyond "later this year" for the app.

The numbers behind the deal, verified

Even the press releases disagree on RLUSD's size. The Robinhood release says more than $2.4 billion, while the same-day C2FO release says more than $2.5 billion (Ripple). DefiLlama is the tiebreaker.

Bitstamp August notional volume$10.1 billion vs $7.4 billion in the Robinhood appRobinhoodBitstamp is 57.7% of Robinhood's crypto volume

The last row is the one most coverage skipped. In August, Bitstamp did $10.1 billion of crypto notional volume against $7.4 billion in the Robinhood app, out of $17.5 billion in total (Robinhood). The settlement leg of this deal sits on the bigger venue.

Why Bitstamp settlement matters more than the app listing

Retail listings make headlines, but they rarely create durable supply. A customer buys a stablecoin, trades out of it and the float leaves. Settlement is different: a venue that settles institutional trades in RLUSD has to keep working balances of it.

A simple illustration, using Robinhood's own August data. Bitstamp averaged $326 million of daily volume (Robinhood). If 10% of that settled in RLUSD, about $32.6 million a day would move on the XRP Ledger.

Flow isn't float, though. The supply that matters is the buffer held between settlements, which neither company has disclosed. That buffer is what to watch in the XRPL share of RLUSD, now $1.002 billion (DefiLlama).

The treasury piece works the same way. If Robinhood's own payments and intercompany netting run on Ripple Treasury, RLUSD becomes a tool inside Robinhood's finance team, not just a product on its shelf (Cointelegraph).

RLUSD vs USDG on Robinhood: two dollars, one platform

Robinhood helped launch the Global Dollar Network in November 2024 with Paxos, Kraken, Galaxy Digital, Anchorage Digital, Bullish and Nuvei (Paxos). Members share the revenue USDG earns, which gives them a reason to push it.

In July, USDG became the default lending asset for Robinhood Earn, and Robinhood announced no change to its USDG agreement this week (CoinDesk). CoinDesk asked how the two will coexist; Robinhood did not immediately respond.

Stablecoin Insider's reading: the two coins are being given different jobs. USDG is the retail yield and on-chain balance asset, where Robinhood shares the economics. RLUSD gets the institutional plumbing, where Ripple brings settlement, custody partners and software. RLUSD supply is 85.0% of USDG's today (DefiLlama), so this is a contest of near equals, not a giant and an upstart.

The clean test comes when RLUSD reaches the app. If Robinhood treats it as one more ticker, USDG keeps the retail default. If RLUSD shows up in Earn or as a cash option, the split has changed. For background, see the USDG Q2 2026 report and the RLUSD Q2 2026 report.

The same-day BNY expansion

BNY already serves as RLUSD's primary reserve custodian. On 27 October it said its Digital Asset Custody platform now supports XRP and RLUSD for eligible institutional clients (Ripple and BNY).

  • Direct mint and redeem: BNY intends to work with Ripple so its clients can mint and redeem RLUSD directly through BNY, subject to final BNY and regulatory approvals (Ripple).
  • Tokenized assets on the XRPL: BNY intends to broaden support for tokenized assets and investment products issued on the ledger (Ripple and BNY).
  • Trade finance: Ripple and BNY are exploring a supply chain finance initiative with C2FO, the working capital platform (Ripple and BNY).
  • C2FO Instant Pay: financing and settlement for C2FO's new instant payment service will run on the XRP Ledger using RLUSD (Ripple). A C2FO spokesperson said it is in testing, with first RLUSD transactions expected by year end (Cointelegraph).

Today, qualified institutions mint and redeem through Ripple's own channel, covered in the Ripple Mint how-to. A bank-side route would let a BNY client move between cash and RLUSD without opening a new relationship. The day before, the OCC gave Ripple final approval for its national trust bank, which will manage RLUSD reserves (Cointelegraph).

What it means for institutions and builders

  • Trading firms on Bitstamp: RLUSD settlement on the XRP Ledger plus Ripple Prime financing across roughly 20 assets puts trading, credit and cash with one counterparty group (Ripple).
  • Corporate treasurers: Robinhood choosing Ripple Treasury for its own operations is a reference customer for the software, separate from any stablecoin decision (CNBC).
  • Banks: the BNY path shows how a custodian can add a stablecoin without issuing one. Any mint and redeem service still needs approvals (Ripple and BNY).
  • RLUSD holders: wider distribution does not change how RLUSD is backed. For reserves and structure, see the RLUSD guide.
💡
Stablecoin Insider's take: The Robinhood RLUSD partnership is a distribution deal disguised as a listing. The app launch will get the attention, but the durable gain for Ripple is Bitstamp settlement and Robinhood's own treasury, both of which force RLUSD balances to stay put. The weak point is that USDG still owns the retail economics on Robinhood. Until RLUSD shows up in Robinhood Earn or as a cash option, Ripple has won the back office, not the customer.
