HSBC RedCoin went live today. The bank's first stablecoin, a Hong Kong dollar token with the ticker RCHKD, is available from 23 October 2026 on PayMe by HSBC, and more than 3.3 million PayMe users can switch on a stablecoin wallet in the coming days, according to [HSBC's launch announcement](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today).

That makes HSBC the second licensed issuer in Hong Kong to put a token into use, and the first to aim it straight at retail payments. Anchorpoint, the other April licensee, started with institutions and professional investors in August ([Anchorpoint](https://anchorpoint.hk/uploads/2026/08/Anchorpoint-commences-institutional-rollout-of-HKDAP-via-Beta-Access.pdf)).

This breakdown covers what RedCoin is, how it works inside PayMe, how it stacks up against HKDAP, and what the launch does and doesn't prove.

### Key Takeaways

- HSBC RedCoin (RCHKD) is HSBC's first stablecoin, HKD denominated and licensed by the HKMA under licence number FRS02 ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).
- More than 3.3 million PayMe users can activate a RedCoin wallet in the coming days for transfers and payments at 100,000+ merchants ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).
- No minimum balance and no extra account opening are needed to activate the wallet, per PayMe head Lawrence Li ([SCMP](https://www.scmp.com/business/cryptocurrency/article/3371805/hsbc-redcoin-stablecoin-launches-33-million-payme-users-hong-kong)).
- Later this year, RedCoin is due in the HSBC HK Mobile Banking App and as a way to subscribe to a tokenised HKD money market fund share class ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).
- Anchorpoint's HKDAP, licensed the same day in April, started with institutions in August and targets retail as early as end-2026 ([Anchorpoint](https://anchorpoint.hk/uploads/2026/08/Anchorpoint-commences-institutional-rollout-of-HKDAP-via-Beta-Access.pdf)).

## What HSBC RedCoin is

RedCoin is a fiat-referenced stablecoin issued by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, the HSBC unit that received one of Hong Kong's first two stablecoin issuer licences on 10 April 2026\. Anchorpoint Financial got the other ([HKMA](https://www.hkma.gov.hk/eng/news-and-media/press-releases/2026/04/20260410-4/)).

HSBC says each RedCoin will be fully backed at all times by high-quality, highly liquid segregated assets and is designed to be redeemable one for one into Hong Kong dollars ([HSBC RedCoin page](https://www.hsbc.com.hk/stablecoins/)). HSBC Digital Assets Custody holds the safekeeping role, and the launch notice lists issuer licence FRS02 next to PayMe's stored value facility licence SVFB002 ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).

Issuing a fiat-referenced stablecoin in Hong Kong has required an HKMA licence since the Stablecoins Ordinance took effect on 1 August 2025 ([HKMA](https://www.hkma.gov.hk/eng/key-functions/international-financial-centre/stablecoin-issuers/); full text at [Cap. 656](https://www.elegislation.gov.hk/hk/cap656)). For the full rulebook, see [Stablecoin Insider's guide to Hong Kong stablecoin regulation](https://stablecoininsider.org/hong-kong-stablecoin-regulation-2025/).

⚠️

Scam alert: HSBC Hong Kong chief executive Maggie Ng said the bank has not authorised any outside party to deal in RedCoin, and anyone claiming to exchange it for you is running a scam. Get RedCoin only inside PayMe, and check any other issuer against the HKMA Register of Licensed Stablecoin Issuers.

The warning above comes from Ng's launch remarks ([on.cc](https://hk.on.cc/hk/bkn/cnt/finance/20261023/bkn-20261023070028872-1023%5F00842%5F001.html)). The HKMA made the same point when it granted the licences, telling the public to use only regulated channels ([HKMA](https://www.hkma.gov.hk/eng/news-and-media/press-releases/2026/04/20260410-4/)).

## How RedCoin works inside PayMe

The rollout is phased. The token is available from today, and PayMe users will be able to activate the in-app stablecoin wallet over the coming days ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)). The first phase covers two things:

- Peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers: send RedCoin instantly to friends and family through PayMe ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).
- Peer-to-merchant (P2M) payments: pay with RedCoin at more than 100,000 merchants through PayMe ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).

Users update the app, select the RedCoin wallet and pay through an interface that closely matches today's PayMe flow, Lawrence Li told reporters ([SCMP](https://www.scmp.com/business/cryptocurrency/article/3371805/hsbc-redcoin-stablecoin-launches-33-million-payme-users-hong-kong)). Other terms mirror the existing PayMe HKD wallet ([on.cc](https://hk.on.cc/hk/bkn/cnt/finance/20261023/bkn-20261023070028872-1023%5F00842%5F001.html)).

Before launch, staff pilots with nearly 100 users tested the full journey from minting and wallet activation to live transfers, and launch offers include PayMe transaction discounts and RewardCash ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).

One gap: HSBC's launch notice does not say which blockchain RedCoin runs on, whether it can leave PayMe for outside wallets, or how much has been minted. Stablecoin Insider will not guess. Treat RedCoin, for now, as a token that lives inside HSBC's own apps.

## What HSBC executives said

Maggie Ng, chief executive for Hong Kong and head of retail banking and wealth there, framed the launch as a shift in plumbing: "Money, assets and information are moving from traditional infrastructure to always-on, data-rich and increasingly programmable digital networks" ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).

John O'Neill, managing director for digital assets and currencies, called it "only the beginning" and said the bank will expand into "wholesale corporate and institutional use cases" ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)). He told reporters the bigger upside is tokenised investing: instant subscription, faster settlement, lower entry thresholds and daily distributions on products such as the HKD money market fund ([on.cc](https://hk.on.cc/hk/bkn/cnt/finance/20261023/bkn-20261023070028872-1023%5F00842%5F001.html)).

Lawrence Li, who runs PayMe, set modest goals for phase one: "The key priority in the first phase is ensuring stable service, avoiding extra burdens for customers and winning their trust" ([SCMP](https://www.scmp.com/business/cryptocurrency/article/3371805/hsbc-redcoin-stablecoin-launches-33-million-payme-users-hong-kong)). He also conceded that Hong Kong's e-payments are already mature, so plain P2P and P2M payments may not look very different to users, and said the first-round goal is building use cases, trust and protection rather than circulation or user counts ([on.cc](https://hk.on.cc/hk/bkn/cnt/finance/20261023/bkn-20261023070028872-1023%5F00842%5F001.html)).

## HSBC RedCoin vs HKDAP: two licences, two strategies

Hong Kong's two licensed issuers picked opposite starting points. The table below lines them up from each issuer's own announcements.

The split matters. Anchorpoint built a token for other institutions to plug into, and its HKDAP rollout is covered in [Stablecoin Insider's HKDAP institutional launch report](https://stablecoininsider.org/hkdap-institutional-launch-hong-kong-stablecoin/). HSBC skipped the middlemen and put its token in a wallet millions of people already open. One is a wholesale settlement asset that hopes to reach consumers. The other is a consumer product that hopes to reach wholesale.

For a shopper, day one looks almost the same as tapping PayMe today. The legal wrapper is what changes: the balance becomes a licensed stablecoin claim rather than stored value. The payoff shows up later, when the same token can buy a tokenised fund, which plain stored value can't.

## Stablecoin Insider's take: distribution beat issuance

Hong Kong's problem with licensed stablecoins was never the licence. It was where to use them, the gap Stablecoin Insider flagged in its read of the [2026 Policy Address stablecoin measures](https://stablecoininsider.org/hong-kong-policy-address-stablecoin-trading/). HSBC answered it with a wallet that already has more than 3.3 million users and 100,000+ merchants ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)). No other HKD stablecoin starts with that reach.

That doesn't mean RedCoin will see heavy use. PayMe's own boss says plain payments won't feel very different ([on.cc](https://hk.on.cc/hk/bkn/cnt/finance/20261023/bkn-20261023070028872-1023%5F00842%5F001.html)), and launch discounts are the main reason to switch in week one. The real test is the tokenised money market fund share class. If RedCoin becomes the fastest way for a retail customer to move into an HKD fund and back, it has a job the old HKD wallet can't do. HSBC also brings a track record: its Orion platform has issued over US$8.3 billion in digital bonds, and its Gold Token has logged 390,000 trades worth US$2.5 billion ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).

💡

Stablecoin Insider's take: RedCoin is the first Hong Kong stablecoin with real retail reach on day one, but reach is not usage. Watch the tokenised fund launch, not the P2P numbers. If RedCoin stays locked inside HSBC apps, it is a better-wrapped PayMe balance. If it opens to licensed trading platforms and other wallets, it becomes Hong Kong's default HKD settlement token.

## What to watch next

- Wallet activations over the coming days, and whether HSBC publishes any circulation figure ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).
- The HSBC HK Mobile Banking App wallet and the tokenised HKD money market fund share class, both due later this year ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).
- Wholesale corporate and institutional use, which O'Neill says is coming and partners are being lined up for ([on.cc](https://hk.on.cc/hk/bkn/cnt/finance/20261023/bkn-20261023070028872-1023%5F00842%5F001.html)).
- Trading on licensed virtual asset platforms, which the Policy Address committed to allowing ([Stablecoin Insider](https://stablecoininsider.org/hong-kong-policy-address-stablecoin-trading/)).
- HKDAP's move to retail, targeted as early as end-2026, which would put the two licensees in direct competition ([Anchorpoint](https://anchorpoint.hk/uploads/2026/08/Anchorpoint-commences-institutional-rollout-of-HKDAP-via-Beta-Access.pdf)).

#### Can RedCoin be used to invest?

Not yet. HSBC plans to let customers subscribe to tokenised products with RedCoin later this year, starting with a share class of its HKD money market fund ([HSBC](https://www.about.hsbc.com.hk/news-and-media/hsbc-redcoin-launches-today)).

## The bottom line

HSBC RedCoin turns a licence granted in April into a product millions of people can open this week ([HKMA](https://www.hkma.gov.hk/eng/news-and-media/press-releases/2026/04/20260410-4/)). Whether it matters depends on the next two steps: the tokenised fund and any opening beyond HSBC's own apps. If you use PayMe, the wallet is worth a look for the launch offers, but there is no reason yet to move a large balance into it.
