- Description: Convert USDT to USDC by selling on a venue, using a 1:1 stablecoin converter, or redeeming USDT for dollars and minting USDC — never by treating the ticker swap as a free issuer exchange.

You convert USDT to USDC by trading one token for the other on a venue or converter, or by cashing USDT to dollars and minting or buying USDC. Issuers do not swap those tickers for you at par.

Tether and Circle are different companies, with different reserves, different redemption gates, and different official contracts. A ticker change is a trade or a two-leg cash cycle, not a free rename.

### Key Takeaways

- Issuers do not exchange USDT for USDC at par; you trade, or you cash out and re-mint.
- The three workable routes are a CEX or OTC desk, a same-chain converter or DEX, or redeem-USDT-then-mint-USDC.
- Confirm both tokens sit on official contracts on the same chain before you send.
- After receive, verify Circle native USDC — not a bridged USDC.e wrapper.
- Tether redemption starts at $100,000 and costs the greater of $1,000 or 0.1%; Circle Mint is not for individuals outside EEA paths.

## Why treasuries convert at all

Counterparties still pay in USDT. Treasury often wants USDC's disclosure calendar and cash-and-cash-equivalent reserve mix, which we laid out in [USDT vs USDC](https://stablecoininsider.org/usdt-vs-usdc-whats-the-difference/).

[![USDT vs USDC: What's the Difference? (2026)](https://storage.ghost.io/c/73/6a/736af0e4-2274-4543-a329-2952b2b52abc/content/images/2026/08/convert-card-usdt-vs-usdc.png)](https://stablecoininsider.org/usdt-vs-usdc-whats-the-difference/)

The constraint is operational, not a ranking. You convert when a payable, a custody policy, or a counterparty rule names USDC, and the cash you hold is still USDT.

## Three routes, not one issuer window

No issuer desk will take your USDT and hand back Circle-issued USDC at 1:1\. Pick the route that matches ticket size, KYC, and chain.

| Route | What actually happens | Typical cost drivers | Best for |
| ------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| A. CEX or OTC | Sell USDT, buy USDC on the same venue | Spread, withdrawal fee, KYC hold | Recurring treasury size with an existing account |
| B. Same-chain converter or DEX | Swap USDT for USDC in one transaction on one chain | Gas, pool fee, slippage on size | On-chain balances you will not send to a venue |
| C. Redeem then mint | Redeem USDT for USD, then mint or on-ramp USDC | Tether's $100k min and greater-of-$1,000-or-0.1% fee, plus Circle Mint or venue on-ramp | Institutions that already clear both issuer desks |

Route A is a pair of secondary-market trades. You still hold a token after the first fill; you hold a different token after the second.

Route B only works on the same chain, against official contracts. A random "USDT→USDC" contract is not a converter.

Route C is two issuer desks in series. [How to redeem a stablecoin for dollars](https://stablecoininsider.org/how-to-redeem-a-stablecoin-for-dollars/) is the USDT-out leg; [how to on-ramp USD to USDC](https://stablecoininsider.org/how-to-on-ramp-usd-to-usdc/) is the USDC-in leg.

[![How to Redeem a Stablecoin for Dollars (2026)](https://storage.ghost.io/c/73/6a/736af0e4-2274-4543-a329-2952b2b52abc/content/images/2026/08/convert-card-redeem.png)](https://stablecoininsider.org/how-to-redeem-a-stablecoin-for-dollars/)

Tether's published minimum is 100,000 USD; the fee is the greater of $1,000 or 0.1%; Tether has sole discretion to approve accounts ([Tether fees](https://tether.to/en/fees)). Circle Mint is for exchanges, institutional traders, banks, and large financial institutions — [Circle states Mint is not available to individuals](https://www.circle.com/en/usdc).

If you cannot clear those gates, Route C collapses to a venue cash-out plus a venue or processor buy. That is still a conversion. It is not issuer par.

## Checklist before any route

Run this list before you click send. Skipping one item is how USDT lands in a USDC-only deposit or a bridged wrapper.

1. **Same chain.** Ethereum USDT does not become Base USDC in one hop.
2. **Official contracts for both tokens.** Check Tether and Circle addresses on that chain, using [how to check the official USDC or USDT contract](https://stablecoininsider.org/how-to-check-the-official-usdc-or-usdt-contract/).
3. **Native, not bridged.** Circle-issued USDC is the target; USDC.e and other wrappers are not.
4. **Gas token ready.** The sending wallet needs the chain's native token, or the swap fails after USDT is approved.
5. **Size versus fees and slippage.** A $2,000 on-chain swap can lose more to gas and pool impact than a venue convert; a $5 million venue ticket needs an OTC quote.
6. **KYC if the venue requires it.** Withdrawals can sit in review after the fill.

Do not treat a 1:1 quote as a guarantee. A converter can still deliver the wrong contract if you picked the wrong output token.

## After you receive USDC

Verify the token against Circle's published address on that chain. [Circle's USDC contract list](https://developers.circle.com/stablecoins/usdc-contract-addresses) is the source; a ticker that says USDC is not enough.

Book the credit as USDC, not as "USDT renamed." The issuer, the reserve claim, and the redemption path all changed.

If the receive is on a chain Circle does not issue natively, you hold a wrapper. That is a second conversion problem, not a successful USDT-to-USDC swap.

For cash you later need back in a bank, the off-ramp is a separate job: [how to off-ramp USDC to ACH or wire](https://stablecoininsider.org/how-to-off-ramp-usdc-to-ach-or-wire/). Do not fold that into the convert.

## What not to do

Do not send USDT to a USDC-only deposit address. The venue credits the asset it expected; a mismatched ticker is a support ticket, not a conversion.

Do not use a random "USDT→USDC" contract a stranger pasted. Approving that spender can drain both tokens.

Do not treat bridged USDC.e as Circle USDC. Circle does not redeem a third-party wrapper at par.

Do not share a seed phrase with a "converter desk." A conversion is a trade or an issuer redemption; it is never a remote-control of your wallet.

## Conclusion

USDT to USDC is a trade or a two-leg cash cycle. Tether will not mint you Circle's token, and Circle will not burn Tether's.

Use a venue or a same-chain converter for ordinary size. Use redeem-then-mint only when both issuer desks are already open and the ticket clears Tether's $100,000 floor.

Finish only when the receiving wallet shows native USDC on Circle's published contract. Until that check passes, the conversion is not done.

## FAQ

### 1\. Will Tether or Circle swap USDT for USDC at 1:1?

No. Each issuer redeems its own token for dollars under its own rules. There is no official ticker-swap window.

### 2\. What is the cheapest route in 2026?

There is no single cheapest path. Venue converts win when you already have KYC and the pair is liquid; same-chain converters win on mid-size on-chain balances; redeem-then-mint only wins when you already clear both desks and the ticket is large enough to absorb Tether's greater-of-$1,000-or-0.1% fee.

### 3\. Can I redeem USDT and mint USDC as an individual?

Usually no. Tether's minimum is 100,000 USD and approval is discretionary. Outside the EEA, Circle Mint is not available to individuals; EEA retail USDC redemption is a Circle France path, not a USDT swap.

### 4\. How do I know I received native USDC?

Match the token contract to Circle's published address for that chain. If the address is a bridge or a USDC.e wrapper, you did not receive Circle-issued USDC.

### 5\. What if I sent USDT to a USDC deposit address?

Stop sending. Open a ticket with the venue and treat it as a misdirected deposit, not as a conversion in progress. Recovery is discretionary and often unavailable.
